Rostelecom Uses Video Collaboration to Conquer Russia’s Vast Geography
As the largest telecommunications provider in the world’s largest country by land mass, Rostelecom has plenty to do. The Russian company is building the telecommunications infrastructure for the 2014 Winter Olympics and for Russia’s nationwide Digital Government initiative, even as it expands services to the farthest reaches of the country’s borders. Its 170,000 employees serve more than 100 million customers who rely on the company’s pay television, fixed-line broadband, long-distance, and wireless services.
Rostelecom’s distributed workforce knows well the challenges of growing a communications infrastructure across an area nearly double the size of the United States. For some employees, a trip to the company’s Moscow headquarters can take longer than flying from London to New York.
To conquer Russia’s imposing geography, Rostelecom is dissolving the ageless barriers of time and distance. How? With face-to-face video collaboration solutions from Polycom. Staffers in Moscow and six regional offices use the custom immersive environments to meet face-to-face, anytime they need to. Featuring high-definition, cinema-quality video and audio, the immersive meeting experience lets managers iron out operational issues, make decisions sooner, plan upgrades and expansions, and execute strategic projects.
NVision Group, a Polycom partner, designed and deployed the immersive environments for Rostelecom. The systems tie into a standards-based, universal communication and collaboration infrastructure so attendees can securely join video calls even from their desk or mobile phone.
A culture of collaboration
As Rostelecom racks up savings by replacing employee travel with video meetings, it also improves productivity making it possible for any authorized employee to join a meeting, and by eliminating the hours or days of travel once required to meet and collaborate in person.
“Video collaboration has become central to how Rostelecom works and communicates,” says Sergey Khomyakov, Polycom Vice President in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. “With just one click, employees can gather in the same room, even if they are thousands of miles apart. They have instant and secure access to information, and they make better decisions sooner.”
